# Emergence map provenance

Natural Earth v5.1.2, commit `f1890d9f152c896d250a77557a5751a93d494776`.

Geometry is [public domain](https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/), including modified/simplified versions. The site does not adopt Natural Earth's default physical-control policy as an assertion of sovereignty. [Source boundary policy and coverage limits](https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/disputed-boundaries-policy/).

Vendored paths in `emergence-world.json` derive from physical land and country references at 1:50 million, and boundary lines/disputed areas at 1:10 million. These scales do not imply metre-level accuracy. File hashes and download URLs are pinned in `scripts/map-sources.json`; the correction registry and full classification audit are in `scripts/map-review.json` and `scripts/map-audit.json`.

The world projection is [Equal Earth](https://shadedrelief.com/ee_proj/), by Šavrič, Patterson and Jenny (2018). Close views use the [cylindrical equal-area projection](https://proj.org/en/stable/operations/projections/cea.html), centred on the focus, with true scale at its latitude. Areas remain proportional; shapes and distances are not universally preserved. The projection formulas are implemented locally without a third-party runtime.

Review date: 2 October 2026. Eight regional source notes have been checked; remaining regions are labelled reference-only. This is not a current military-control map, an exhaustive register of maritime claims, or a declaration of ownership. Separate legal recognition, administration and claims are attributed in the notes. Editorial exclusions do not imply surveyed replacement geometry.

The public-domain geometry's license is separate from the site's AGPL-3.0 code and curation, and from the licenses of news/model outputs.
